The union between Sweden and Norway
The union between Sweden and Norway originated from the Kieler peace treaty in 1814. At the end of the Napoleon wars Denmark and Norway were among the defeated and Sweden was among the victors. Sweden with it’s superior military resources forced Denmark to surrender Norway to the Swedes. ... Actually, the only areas in which Sweden exclusively made the decisions were questions regarding the king and everything concerning foreign affairs.
Often Norwegian interests were set aside in favor of Swedish ones when dealing with other countries The fact that Sweden spoke for Norway on the international arena was a way for the Swedes to label the Norwegians as inferior. In Norway the public opinion was that they should have the exact same rights as their union partner.
