Rap music has been around a little over 25 years now with hip-hop culture being slightly older. We now have generations of teens who grew or are growing up listening to rap. We are just beginning to see the long term effects and benefits of the imagery gleaned from videos and lyrical content. At this point its safe to say that the effects are deep and long reaching. ... The long standing struggle between the tendency of the music industry to centralize music and the stylistic diversity of artists and their videos continues in the popular(rap) music of today. The history of American rap music may be seen as a relationship between identity and hardships of growing up in the inner city. Whereas the mainstream music industry reproduces music, establishes stars, and generally attempts to ensure profits, those in the margins typically include entrepreneurs who run independent labels, models, and musicians who provide impetus for new styles, in rap videos, which are then sometimes pulled into the center and promoted to a mass audience. ... Although music styles, recording stars, and hit songs change constantly, strong continuities remain within American popular music which leads me to rap videos.
