The stage of adolescence can bring forth a sense of confusion and frustration. In the story “Marigolds” by Eugenia Collier and in To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee the characters destroy two elderly women’s flowers in a rage of anger. In this paper, I will explain the similarities, differences, amends the children try to make, and what the kids learned as a result of their experiences. These events show similarities in the following situations. The story’s both take place during the depression in small communities. In the story “Marigolds” a young black girl named Lizabeth, is going through her adolescence. An aged woman named Miss Lottie grows magnificent marigolds in her yard. However, Lizabeth cannot understand why one of the poorest women can have such beautiful flowers. One morning in a sea of anger, Lizabeth runs to Miss Lottie’s house and pulled up all of her marigolds and ruined her whole garden. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a boy named Jem Finch does the same thing as Lizabeth.
