The Impact of Personal Digital Assistants in Nursing The personal digital assistant, also known as the “PDA” was introduced into the market in 1996 as a compact hand-held computer device that’s primary purpose was for personal use to organize one’s schedule and personal information. These portable, hand-held computers provide easy and quick access to information as they have the memory capability to store information, download software programs and access the internet. Information is transferred and retrieved from the handheld computer to the central server by connecting it via cable to the central server, also known as “hot-syncing”. (5) The PDA can be utilized in the healthcare field as it allows instant access to information through databases and software applications that can assist many healthcare professionals in their daily functions, especially allowing for a centralized information center that is an institution-wide documentation system.
