I am a geniusAristotle, an ancient philosopher, once stated “If liberty and equality, as is thought by some are chiefly to be found in democracy, they will be best attained when all persons alike share in the government to the utmost”(Aristotle). Aristotle concluded this many years after the first “great democracy” had been established in ancient Athens. The Athenian democracy reached its peak under the rule of Pericles. According to Thucydides’ account of Pericles’ funeral oration, Athens was a picture-perfect democracy. Pericles’ was almost euphoric as he described his life-work and everlasting passion, the city of Athens. Skepticism exists around this account of a flawless democracy. Pericles’ observed the Athenian democracy from the highest point within the society. He was heavily involved in the decision making along with many other Grecian men, but it was the groups of people that were left out of the decision process that tell a different story. Aristotle concluded that to achieve ultimate liberty and equality, ALL persons need to share in the government and reap its benefits. It is imperative to evaluate the Athenian democracy from the perspective of both the participants and non-participants.
