The A & P, written by John Updike, shows the inner-workings of a young man’s mind. Without directly expressing the feelings of Sammy, the author shapes his thoughts to indirectly give a sense of understanding. For example, his random thoughts labeling the customers as “sheep” and “house slaves” shows the routine, dullness, and familiarity of his job. As he looks at the girls his thoughts wander to Queenie. Showing his dreamy imagination, he creates her background and parents to be more than what is probably the actual truth . Him quitting his job based on how his manager treated the three girls shows a high level of sensitivity and heroism.
