David Lynch’s The Elephant Man is realistic fiction of a man who was deformed so hideously that he was barely recognizable as a human and, instead, was a sideshow performer in Victorian England. The actual Joseph (John in the movie) Merrick, also known as the elephant man, had an extremely rare genetic disorder called Proteus Syndrome, not neurofibromatosis as was first suspected, and this movie was about his supposed story. ... This movie gave an aura of darkness and sorrow through from its black and white presentation to its soundtrack, not just the music but sound effects as well. Throughout the movie, interesting sound techniques and music accenting the unknown, pain, and yearning present throughout the movie.
The opening scene of The Elephant Man provides a sort of feeling that this will be an art house partial horror movie since most of what is shown is mostly visual and is somewhat disturbing but has no real point to a plot since one hasn’t been introduced.
