... “The Open Boat” provides ample examples of man’s relationship with nature and the helplessness of mankind in its environment. In Crane’s short story of four men who find themselves lost at sea in a “ten foot dingy,” the author communicates the idea that these men are at the mercy of the sea. ... He falls victim to nature’s force. Crane demonstrates nature greatly influencing the quality of human life in many of his writings. ... While Crane focuses on nature’s affect on the quality of human life, Norris shows man falling victim to society’s demands. ... Norris demonstrates that Lewiston’s quality of life is being determined by the capitalist system when he says, “That-that ruins me. ... ” Lewiston’s contentment is found at the end of the story when he finally surrenders his dream of surviving in the capitalist system to be a salary worker in “the street cleaning brigade” giving up his desired quality of life because of the capitalist system.
