Walter Dean Myers is a very accomplished writer. Authoring such novels as Hoops, Monster, and Slam, Myers is one of today’s most highly respected writers for young adults. He is a two-time recipient of the Newbery Honor, and has received five Coretta Scott King Awards. It is clear that Myers sees Muhammad Ali as a hero. This can be seen throughout The Greatest, for instance, in Ali’s views on how blacks were being treated in the sixties. An African American himself, Myers tells how other successful black athletes, such as Joe Lewis and Walt Frasier, did what the media wanted them to do and stayed silent on such important issues as racism in America.
