What is meant by the word abortion?
Doctors use the word abortion to describe any death of a baby in the womb and it’s expulsion from the mother’s body. What most people mean by the term abortion is a procured abortion. ...
Abortion used to be viewed as a crime. In Ireland and some other places it still is, but most Western countries have changed their laws so that it is possible today to get a legal abortion without having to visit a back street clinic. In Britain, abortion used to be a crime under the Offences Against the Person Act of 1861. However, in 1967 a bill was introduced into the House of Commons, which then became The Abortion Act of 1967.
The Abortion Act of 1967
The law in the UK says that an abortion may be performed up to the end of the 24th week of pregnancy if two doctors agree that:
• To continue pregnancy would involve a physical or mental risk to the mother that is greater than the risks involved with abortion.
