While attending San Jose State University, I found the art courses to be very general and discouraging. In that the classes were big and the instructors didn’t have time to focus on specific areas of individual students needs. After sending out numerous applications and looking at schools nation wide, I finally decided to transfer to a school which focused more on the arts and field in which I wanted to make my career. Upon entering the Columbus College of Art and Design, I realized that I had chosen a school that would help me grow as an artist. It changed my point of view and helped me realize what it would be like to be a future illustrator. The school has wonderful and exciting classes and faculty that is second to none. From the first semester at CCAD, I knew that I would produce work to a standard that I previously had not. The breakthrough work which had influenced me the most was a children book’s illustration piece I produced last spring. Before I got into the piece itself, the first part of the assignment was to create a storyboard containing 16 scenes. I chose my favorite scene from the board to illustrate in greater detail. This was my first time illustrating a fantasy story that I had written. The instructor who assigned this project, Mr. Catalano, greatly inspired me to produce some of my best illustration works and made my first experience in illustration enjoyable one.
