The figure most often associated with the Middle Ages is the knight. Romantically depicted as clad in shining armor, knights roamed the countryside on horseback saving damsels in distress. There is much more to know about the knights of the Middle Ages. Knights were a select class of men who underwent years of training. The word ?knight? comes from the French word ?cnight,? which means household servant. The concept was brought to England during the Norman Conquest of 1066 AD. In England, a nobleman?s son, either firstborn or younger sons, left his home to go to a neighboring castle and serve as a page when he was approximately eight years old. As a page he would begin his training as a knight. This training was expensive. If the page had a rich father then he would finance the training. Otherwise, the page had to earn his keep by working.
