This movie follows the lives of a group of young German recruits in WWI and their transformations from boys to men in such a small amount of time; specifically focusing on the main character, Paul Baumer. At the beginning of the movie, the boys were told by their Schoolmaster that there was no time for play and that they should join the army. He said they would be representing their country and this was a great honor. They took his advice and were excited to enlist in the army. They couldn’t wait to be out on the frontline of the war fighting for their country. They thought this would be so amazing and they would love it. They didn’t know about what really went on at war and what tough lifestyles they were about to begin. They began their new lives at training camp. Corporal Himmelstoss made them march in straight lines and stay together as one group. He drilled them constantly and was very tough on them. He particularly picked on Paul and made him repeat the drills many more times. The boys believed this was what war was going to be like. They had no idea that they would never use what they had learned here once they were on the frontline. Once they finished training camp they were sent to war. They soon discovered what war was actually like. They didn’t stay in straight lines with one another; it was each man for himself. Paul realized you couldn’t think about anything other than how to stay alive.
