A Separate Peace A Separate Peace, by John Knowles, is an admirable novel about a schoolboy’s childhood memories. Throughout the story, many diverse topics concerning the human instinct are brought to light. The book goes into a lot of detail on the darker aspects of human life. As a result of his experiences in war, Leper Lepellier, a main character symbolizing non-conformity, relays the darker aspects of human nature to others. He does so by indirectly admitting he has learned of a darker side, by his own insane behavior, and through the change in his personality. Leper indirectly admits that he has learned of the evil side of man.
