“A Valediction: Forbidding Mourning” by John Donne, published in the early 17th century is a direct statement of Donne’s ideal of spiritual love. The poem is a sequence of metaphors and comparisons, each describing a way of looking at the lovers’ separation that will help them to avoid the mourning forbidden by the poems title. The context, structure and imagery of the poem all contribute largely to the speaker’s request from his lover to not make their farewell the occasion for mourning and sorrow but consider their love to be far superior and to not be disturbed by this separation. ...
Like many of Donnes love poems, "A Valediction: forbidding Mourning" creates a dichotomy between the common love of the everyday world and the uncommon love of the speaker.
