Pugh and Martin are greeted by a "tenclone" by the name of John Chow - five females and five males, each with the same name, appearance and basic training. They are later able to be distinguished by their different middle names and their further educational studies. Both Pugh, but particularly Martin, find it difficult to relate to the clones. Martin has never come across clones before. To meet with the same face, the same expression, day after day is no different from when they were on their last two-man mission together: just one other face to look upon. They expected some relief from this once they landed on Libra. They feel omitted and extraneous in this community and even communication is difficult. They decide to use a Spanish dialect to talk about the tenclone. There is no show of sympathy from the clones over the humans' sense of isolation or any other matter. Being clones, they have no need to feel sympathy - they directly experience feelings, not emotional responses to someone else's fears, pains or joys.
