The book Nectar is a Sieve takes place in India at the time period of about 1940’s-50’s. The book begins in India with a widow of a poor Indian Farmer, her name was Rukmani. Rukmani is a literate woman The thesis of the book is one of change. The change is from agriculture to industrialization. As well the different things that go with the woman’s role in industrialization. The author communicates to the reader that change is difficult in many senses. One way is the way the family got downtrotten and became engulfed in poverty after the factories began to move in. The author also conveyed the fact that the woman was at the disadvantage in the old culture.
