Degree: More Important or Less Important? In Shanghai, I was told that a Master's degree holder was working as a four-person team leader on the assembly line of General Motor Shanghai. A Master's degree holder works as a blue-collar worker? I guess this might be surprising news for many Chinese? Or have I gone out of China for too long to tell the attitude and mood of regular Chinese? (Please tell me about this at the Forum if you would. Thanks!) When my friends and I worked in a restaurant in America, we used to joke that our restaurant was both "labor-intensive" and "knowledge-intensive." Every one of us had a Bachelor or Master degree and the job of waiting tables was physically challenging. Later, as I dinned in more American restaurants, I realized that it was also true to many American restaurants. For instance, all the waitresses in a restaurant bar in Chicago are medical school students.
