by NICK GENTILE Messenger Sports SWANTON - The Missisquoi Valley girls basketball team shut out Vergennes in the first quarter. The Lady Commodores retaliated by out-scoring the T-Birds in every other quarter. After rebounding from a 6-0 deficit after the first quarter, Vergennes pulled away from Missisquoi in the fourth quarter for a 33-26 win on Tuesday. The Thunderbirds started the game with complete dominance that looked like shades of their win over Vergennes earlier in the season. Whitney Grennon started the scoring by drawing a foul and responding with a free throw for a 1-0 lead. After two missed free throws by Vergennes, Lise Parent gave the T-Birds one of few offensive sparks on the evening with a 3-pointer to extend the lead. The defense continued to wreak havoc on the Commodore shooters, including two big blocks by Cari Christenson. On the ensuing possession following the second block by Christensen, a backwards between-the-legs pass from Laurel McWilliams found Ashley Gagne, who banked home a jumper for a 6-0 lead that carried through to the end of the quarter.
