Quoting a person while writing a paper can be either detrimental or beneficial to your grade. If the quote you use is not cited correctly you may be accused of plagiarism, which at the college level could mean receiving a failing grade. A quote should be used when you need to say what the person to be quoted is saying but there is no possible way to paraphrase it without changing the overall meaning. If using a quotation cannot be avoided then you must give the source of the quote recognition by properly citing the source from which it came. A quote should never be used in a research paper and a student will receive a grade deduction if he or she uses a quote for any assignment in Mr. Braun’s general psychology course.
