Intro. To Western Art Through history women have played a big roll in art. Most of the art pieces are representations of women in many different aspects. Some of them are goddesses and some of them are religious representations like the Virgin Marie and some of them are used as symbols of different things such as fertility, purity, sweetness, tenderness, ect. I noticed that in some pieces, especially the ones were they were trying to represent something abstract like a feeling, the artist tried to exaggerate some aspects of the female body. This not only happened in the representations of human females but also in the ones of animals. I studied many representations of women and picked out the ones that were more interesting for me. I tried also to show, not only the different meanings that the artists gave to their work but also the difference between the periods. That’s the reason why I tried to look for works or representations that contrasted very much with one another. In antiquity, women have been portrayed as a symbol of life and fertility. Explorers have found many representations of women in cemeteries and/or tombs. In the past, humans used many different symbols to represent energies or forces around them.
