Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed, was written by Ray Bradbury in the late 1940’s. Ray Bradbury is a famous, world known writer in the Science Fiction genre, who has changed the way people think through his unique style of writing. Some of Bradbury’s best-known books include; The Martian Chronicles, The Illustrated Man, Fahrenheit 451, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Bradbury has written over five-hundred works, and his writings have named him one of the classic authors of the 20th Century. The story begins with a normal family from the planet earth, the Bittering family, landing on the planet Mars, in a rocket ship. The family decides to settle down after much debating. However, the father insists that there is something wrong. A few days into their life on Mars, the family finds out that New York was hit by an atom bomb, which meant that the only space station they would have been able to return to was destroyed. In a panick, the father decides that he is going to begin building a rocket ship so that his family can make it back to Earth.
