Fixed Form Poetry Poetry with both meter and end rhyme. Blank Verse Poetry Verse consisting of unrhymed lines, usually of iambic pentameter. Free Verse Poetry Verse composed of variable, usually unrhymed lines having no fixed metrical pattern. Rhyme Likeness of sound. Internal Rhyme Similarity among the sounds of words within the same line of verse. (i.e. Mike, the muse, makes malts with salts.) End Rhyme Similarity between/among sounds of words at the end of 2 or more lines. (i.e. fun, run) Masculine Rhyme 1 syllable of a word rhymes with another word. (i.e. bend, send0 Feminine Rhyme The last 2 syllables of a word rhyme with another word. (i.e. lawful, awful) Triple Rhyme The last 3 syllables of a word of a line rhyme. (i.e. victorious, glorious) Slant/Imperfect Rhyme Words that "look" like rhyme, but don't sound alike. (i.e. love, move) Sound A distinctive noise. Stops/Mutes A word with the p, t; k sound. Sibilants A word with the s, soft c; sh sound. Liquids/Nasals A word with the m, n; l sound. Gutturals A word with the g, hard c; k sound. Plosives A word with the fl, gl, sl; st sound. Alliteration The repetition of the same sound in the beginning of a word. Assonance The repetition of identical or similar vowel sounds, especially in stressed syllables.
